What religion and/or faith did the tattooed ring bands come from?

I've always thought these looked cool but I figured I better do some research so I knew what I was getting instead of just getting something that looked cool. The tattoo goes around the finger like a wedding band (can also be put on another finger) and usually has a design or is just a solid band for men.
What do they mean and what do they stand for? Is it to just show that 'I'm married' even if you don't have your wedding ring on? Showing that marriage is permanent in the eyes of God?
Also if there is a specific religion or faith this came from it would be interesting to know. A lot of the ones I looked at were "tribal" and "celtic"...some were even exact duplicates of the wedding band/ring that they wore.
